# Amazon Seller Management Service: Where Your Product’s Profit Really Goes Most Amazon sellers can tell you what their product sells for. Far fewer can tell you what they keep. Between the price on the listing and the money that reaches your bank account sits a long line of costs: fees, advertising, shipping, returns, storage, tax and the product itself. Miss a few of them and a product that looks profitable can quietly lose money. That’s why many sellers look into an **Amazon seller management service**, a partner who handles part or all of the account, from listings and advertising to inventory and reporting. Before you pay anyone to manage your account, you need to know what a healthy product looks like on paper. This guide breaks down the profit stack layer by layer, gives you a worksheet to complete, and shows where outside help makes a difference and where it doesn’t. ### The Profit Stack at a Glance Start with the worksheet. Fill in the last column with your own numbers for one product. | **Layer** | **Where to Find It** | **What Sellers Often Forget** | **Your Number** | |---|---|---|---| | Landed product cost | Supplier invoices | Freight, duties, inspection, packaging | | | Inbound shipping and prep | Courier and prep invoices | Labelling, bundling, damaged stock | | | Referral fee | Amazon fee schedule | It varies by category | | | Fulfilment fee | Amazon fee schedule | It varies by size and weight | | | Storage fees | Seller Central reports | Slow stock costs more to hold | | | Advertising | Advertising console | Ad spend needed just to rank | | | Returns and refunds | Returns report | Unsellable stock and refund costs | | | Tax and currency | Accountant, bank | GST treatment, exchange rate swings | | | Time and tools | Subscriptions, hours | Your own labour | | The formula is simple: **net profit per unit = selling price minus every layer above**. Divide that by the selling price to get your true margin. ### Layer One: What the Product Really Costs You The price on your supplier’s quote is not your product cost. Your landed cost includes manufacturing, freight, import duties, inspection, packaging and any bank or currency charges along the way. Sellers who sourced a product on a quote and never updated the number often discover their margin was thinner than they believed. Rebuild this figure from actual invoices every time you reorder. ### Layer Two: Getting Stock to Amazon Once stock arrives in Australia, it still has to reach Amazon’s fulfilment centres in sellable condition. That can mean labelling, prepping, bundling and paying for transport. If units arrive damaged or incorrectly labelled, you may pay again to fix them. These costs are small per unit, but they repeat on every shipment. ### Layer Three: Amazon’s Fees Amazon charges a referral fee based on the product’s category and a fulfilment fee based on its size and weight, when you use Fulfilment by Amazon. Two products at the same price can leave you with very different margins because of these two lines alone. Use Amazon’s own revenue calculator before you commit to stock, and recheck it when fee schedules change. ### Layer Four: Storage and Slow Stock Holding inventory costs money, and slow-moving stock usually costs more to hold than fast sellers. Over-ordering ties up cash, increases storage charges and sometimes forces discounting to clear space. A product with a good margin can still disappoint if half of every order sits on the shelf for months. ### Layer Five: Advertising Advertising is often treated as optional, but on competitive products it is often needed to earn visibility in the first place. Treat ad spend as a cost per unit sold, not as a separate budget. Watch your total advertising cost against your total sales, including organic ones. A well-managed [Amazon PPC service in Australia](https://thecreativecircuit.com.au/blogs/amazon-ppc-service-in-australia-how-the-right-ppc-agency-drives-profitable-growth/) can help sellers understand campaign costs, improve targeting and identify wasted advertising spend. If spend rises while organic sales stay flat, your ads may be paying for sales you would have made anyway. ### Layer Six: Returns and Damaged Stock Some customers return products, and not every returned unit can be resold. Refunds, return processing and write-offs for damaged or unsellable items all reduce profit. Categories like clothing and electronics tend to see more returns than others, so look at your own returns report rather than assuming the best case. ### Layer Seven: Tax, Currency and Cash Flow GST treatment, exchange rates on overseas purchases and payment timing all affect what you actually keep. If you buy stock in a foreign currency, a shift in the exchange rate can change your margin between orders. Talk to an accountant about how GST applies to your business, because getting it wrong can be expensive. ### Layer Eight: Your Own Time and Tools Software subscriptions, photography, design and the hours you spend managing the account all have a cost, even if they never appear on an invoice. If you earn a small profit per unit but spend most of your week keeping the account running, the real return is lower than it looks. ### Where an Amazon Seller Management Service Can Help A good **Amazon seller management service** can make several layers of the stack work harder. It can improve listings so more visitors convert, tighten advertising so less money is wasted, forecast inventory to reduce storage costs, keep your account healthy and report on profit instead of just sales. Investing in [Amazon listing optimisation](https://thecreativecircuit.com.au/blogs/amazon-listing-optimization-performance-with-rank-conversion/) can also help improve product visibility and conversion rates, making existing advertising traffic more valuable. It can’t rescue a product that was never viable. If your landed cost is too high, your category fees are heavy and the price can’t rise, no amount of management turns that into a strong business. A good provider will tell you so early, before you spend more. ### How to Judge Whether a Service Is Worth Paying For Compare the cost of the service with the profit it could realistically improve. Then ask these questions: - Will you report on profit and margin, or only sales and ad metrics? - Will I own my seller account, listings and advertising data? - How is your fee structured, and what happens if results don’t improve? - Who will work on my account day to day? - Can you show me how you’d review my profit stack before we start? Clear, specific answers are a good sign. Vague ones usually are not. ### Conclusion Profit on Amazon is what remains after every layer has taken its share. Sellers who know each layer can price, order and advertise with confidence. Those who don’t often find out too late. Whether you manage the account yourself or bring in an **Amazon seller management service**, start with the worksheet above and work from real numbers. Amazon Seller Management Service
